When can someone with 14 years ILR apply for naturalisation

Post by Zebrudaya » Fri Sep 13, 2013 5:54 pm

Dear Gurus and other senior members

Please I need your help over this issue. I have recently been granted ILR on the basis of 14 years mixture of legal stay and overstay in the UK. With the frequent penchant of the Home Office to change the regulations, I don`t know the current qualifying time to get naturalised/qualify for a British passport. So my humble question is this: should someone with 14 years ILR just wait for one year after ILR to naturalise or is he expected to stay for 5 years after getting his ILR.

Thank you for a prompt response.

What was your immigration status before you applied for ILR, state your legal and illegal stay dates.

Dear Lucapooka and D4109125

Thank you for your prompt replies. By the time I applied for 14 years ILR, I was already an overstayer. I came into UK in December 1998 on a visit visa which I was able to extend to the year 2000. So, apparently, I was legal up till the year 2000. I tried to change over to a different/suitable visa but was not successful, hence the overstay unfortunately. I am keen to know what the current regulation governing naturalisation for people with 14 years ILR is because I don`t want any undue problems after what I had already gone through.
