Hi,
I am so excited I came across this board! I hope you can help me as I am in a really unique situation. My wife and I are currently living in Eastern Europe (Latvia). I am British and my wife is a non-Latvian citizen (as you may know some Latvian residents hold “alien” non-citizen passports which does not allow them to live and work in the UK without a visa) we have a child together who is a British citizen. We want to relocate to the UK early next year to settle down and raise our child amongst my family and friends. Therefore we require some advice regarding the application process for a spouse visa. We will have free accommodation available to us for as long as we need it, and my family would be able to support us if needed while we are looking for employment. We would not be a burden to the taxpayers or apply for benefits because we will have help from my family. However, we do not meet the income requirement and do not have sufficient savings to cover the shortfall. I understand that my family members cannot co-sponsor my wife as third party financial support is no longer permitted under the new rules. We have recently become aware of the Surinder Singh route:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23029195
http://www.ukmarriagevisa.com/eea-family-permit
However, we can't find any relevant information on the official UKBA website, which makes me wonder if this route even exists? Or are they deliberately trying to hide it from people? Is there anyone who could explain to us how this provision actually works? Can we apply from Latvia? We have been together and lived together in Latvia for over 3 years. I have a small IT consultancy business here, which I believe makes me eligible to sponsor my wife for an EEA family permit. Do I still need to meet any financial requirements? Does my wife need to pass the English test? How long does it take to get this permit? I understand that the initial permit is valid for six months? What happens once we are in the UK, provided she gets the permit? The UKBA website is completely useless! We don’t even know where to start, so any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
