When can I apply for an extension?

When can I apply for an extension?

I am on a T2 general issued Jan28 2011 and have LTR until feb 28 2014 along with my wife.

My office is currently reapplying for a new CoS for me and I will remain in same job/title etc.

Is there an earliest possible date by which we can apply for an extension?

Would an early application affect how long the two visas would be valid for in total, I.e aren't extension visa valid for 2 years and a month, will I have difficulty making it to 5 years at the end to apply for ILR?
