Can I re-enter before expiry date?

Can I re-enter before expiry date?

Hi,
I'm currently living in London and have planned to travel abroad, returning 5 days before my PSW expiry date (in January). Just wondering if I could be refused entry?

Currently I'm in the process of applying to an unmarried couple visa and I'm hoping I can ask for passports back so I can travel during the holidays.

Will a letter from my emplyer and the letter from the UKBA saying I've applied for another residence be enough?

Any insight would be highly appreciated.
