Question About Renounciation

Respected Forum Experts,

I have 2 queries with regards to surrendering my previous Indian Citizenship:

1) Is there a time limit as to when I need to apply for surrendering my Passport after acquisition of British Citizenship?

2) This may sound silly but here goes nothing- My Indian Passport has been expired for quite a while now. Hypothetically, if I travel to India on a British Passport (and Indian Tourist Visa)- how would Immigration know that I ever had an Indian passport?...
