Change of last Name after approval

Post by similaw » Tue Oct 08, 2013 4:50 pm

I recently got approval for naturalization and got invitation for the ceremony on the 21st of October. My question is that since i have been in Ireland i have been using my maiden name which is on the approval letter but i have been getting a lot pressures from my inlaws to change my last name to my married name( considering the culture i am from) . can i change my name after the ceremony or i am stuck with my maiden name and if yes how can i change my last name after naturalization. Thanks

You're Irish now. Nobody can force you to do something you don't want. It's something to keep in mind.

Another thing to keep in mind, changing names is always is a huge pain. I'd avoid it if possible.

Many 'modern' Irish women use both names.

Their professional life is in their single (maiden) name, as this is the name on their university qualification papers, so they use this name at work. eg Ms Single Surname

Their social life is in their married name. eg Mrs Married Surname

Some use two surnames eg Ms Single surname Married Surname.

They can have a bank account in either name, or two accounts, one in each name.

They can have their passport or drivers licience or other official documents in either name. If you want these in your married name, simply send a copy of your marriage certificate when you apply for them, and sign the form using your married name.

So your naturalisation certificate is in your single name. Then if you want an Irish passport you can get it in that name, or you can get it in your married name by giving the naturalisation certificate and a copy of your marriage certificate and signing the application Mrs Married Surname. This is how an Irish woman indicates that she is to be called by her husband's surname - she just uses it when she is completing forms and if it is an official form she sends her marriage cert as proof that she has the right to use his surname.
