Stolen BRP but resigning from job- can I still travel?

Post by Skylar1331 » Wed Nov 06, 2013 4:51 pm

Our house was broken into a few weeks ago and my brp was stolen. We reported it to the police that morning and have the crime number and documentation etc. and I just today notified the home office. Because I am planning to cancel my visa when I leave my job (and I'm leaving my job at the end of the month), do I need to apply for a new BRP?

(The specifics: I am resigning from my job on November 28th on which date my employer will be contacting the UK Home Office to let them know that I will no longer be sponsored by them. I have to give four weeks notice so essentially I will be working right up until Christmas. I am an American citizen on a Tier II visa which I just switched to from Post Study Migrant a few months ago. )

It seems crazy to have to apply for a new one and give up my passport for two months, particularly if we're packing up our house, giving up our jobs and moving on on Dec. 19. Also, my partner of a year is a UK citizen and we're planning to spend Christmas at his mother's house in Liverpool. I would like to be able to get in and out of the UK to interview with potential employers over the next few months and I'm wondering if I can just defacto become a tourist or if I have to fill out some paperwork?

The brp replacement form says you don't have to get a new one if your visa will expire in 4 weeks. If my job will "expire" in four weeks does that count? What about the 60 days to get a new sponsor?

Some more specific questions:

1)If I have not yet submitted my official letter of resignation but bring a copy of it and the police report and leave the country, can I get back in without my BRP? (I had previously booked travel for Nov. 22nd to see my family in Italy)

2) If I submit my letter of resignation early can I leave for this travel and come back without my brp as a tourist?

3)Can I use a change of circumstance form to notify the home office of the situation and try to become a tourist?

4)Is there a help bureau I can go to in London to ask about this or are the boards my only choice? Someone said I could explain my situation and get some help from the Home Office- anyone know if this is true or possible (and/or how?)

5)Should I have my partner’s mother write me a letter that I will be visiting her for the holidays so I don’t have trouble getting in and out of the UK when I become a tourist?

6)If by some miracle of god another company in the UK wants to hire me and I switch my sponsorship over will I have to start from scratch with the Tier II because I entered the country as a tourist?

Any suggestions on the best way to approach this with the authorities?
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Many thanks.
