A new points-based system aimed at restricting immigration to the UK to those with skills in demand will start in the new year, it has been confirmed.

We already have a points-based system....it's called the Highly Skilled Migrants programme. I really wonder if this government just takes the public for a fool. They are saying that they are going to implement something that has already been implemented for almost 3 - 4 years already.
In a few years time we'll look back on immigration control like we look back on American prohibition in the thirties - futile and counter-productive.

If you read between the mumbo-jumbo there is actually nothing new here. Just like the recent name change, it is nothing but window-dressing.

Is this new news?? (Dates of implementation might be new, but the general gist isn't, is it?)

No, it's not new.

Has it occurred to anyone that this may be a hint that the HSMP scheme may change yet again come 2008. So it won't be new but revamped, maybe points allocation may change, this was something that was mentioned in the consultation document (March 2006) at http://www.bia.homeoffice.gov.uk/6353/a ... ndpap1.pdf
"85. It is not necessarily the case that the
combinations of attributes needed in the
UK will always be the same. The Tier 1 points
system meets the test for the new system of
being flexible, since the points can be adjusted
in response to a changing UK labour market.
For example, the minimum salary required to
enter with just a bachelors degree could be
changed, or the number of points awarded
for a particular type of degree could be
re-assessed.This flexibility ensures that the
design of Tier 1 will meet not just current UK
economic needs, but also those of the future. "
