Canadian going to Spain with her Hungarian husband

Hello,
I am a Canadian ESL teacher, and I would like to go to Spain with my Hungarian husband. He doesn't speak any Spanish, but he is willing to do anything: wash dishes, construction, etc. We would like to have an adventure together as a newlywed couple.

1. What steps does my EU husband have to do to become a resident of Spain?

2. If he is a resident of Spain, can I also work in Spain? What steps are involved? How long does it take?

3. Should I go with a student visa, or can I go without a visa as a tourist?

I would just like to add that I have a residence permit in Hungary. Does this change anything?

As far as I know he can just go, but u'd need to check whether he'd need to register as a worker like I think he would here.

You can go with him as he would be exercising his treaty rights.

Since your husband is a citizen of an EU country, he will be able to reside and work in Spain as far as I am aware as Spain has opened up its markets to the new Accession countries as well. He does not have to prove knowledge of the spanish language to be eligible to reside in Spain. You will also be given the rights that are confered to him by Spain and so will be able to work as well once the Residence Card is obtained.

You do not have to apply for any visa beforehand as you are a non-visa national and should be able to apply for the Residence card once you are in Spain. Please confirm all this information and also inquire any further information with the Spanish embassy in Hungary as well before you take any steps.

Spain has now transposed Directive 2004/38/EC into spanish law (see links at http://eumovement.wordpress.com/info-spain/), which reduces some of the older requirements. The text of the law is in Spanish, but it likely corresponds closely to the Directive itself (which you can find in English and Hungarian).
