working permit EU/country-limited?

Post by :clueless: » Tue Jan 07, 2014 1:46 pm

Hello everyone :)

I have some questions on the working permits issued for EU/only limited to one country:

First, if a non-EU-citizen (Turkish) receives a job offer for an EU-country (in this case: Poland), are they usually issuing a EU working permit limited to one year and to this specific job? Other websites told me there is also country-limited working permits, so i'm wondering what is the standard procedure.

Second, assuming the one year EU working permit is issued, then after 12 months (at least this is the case for Germany), it can be extended to an unlimited permit (tho still limited to the specific job?). So what happens, if at some point after the first year, the person would receive a job offer from another EU-conutry (in this case hopefully Germany :) ), would he have to get a whole new permit?

Third, assuming the permit is limited to Poland, can it become EU-wide under certain conditions?

I hope someone can help me with this, as I've been fishing in the huge sea called internet, yet only found very few and vague information.
Thank you a lot in advance :)

In general the work permit is limited to one job in one country at first. Then after a period of time (at least one year but maybe more than that) it becomes a general work permit for any job in that country only.

If you have a needed qualification (like a doctor) you can get a work permit for any job in your profession in the whole of a country, so for example Ireland can give a doctor a general work permit to work as a doctor anywhere in Ireland, but he can only work in Ireland on this permit.

So if you apply to Ireland, the work permit is for Ireland only and gives no right to work in any other EU country.

Can it become EU wide under certain conditions? Not really, but if you work for long enough to get citizenship (in Ireland you must work for five years before you can apply for citizenship, and processing could take another year) then as soon as you have Irish / EU citizenship you can work in any EU country.

Also if you marry an EU citizen, they can work in any EU country and you can go with them and work also, so that would be EU wide permission to work.

So if you get a work permit for Poland, you must apply for a new permit from Germany if you want to work there.
