Indian Passport Surrender

Post by NOG » Fri May 30, 2014 5:19 pm

I acquired British nationality while being in the UK.
I am now in Spain (not sure how long for). Is it possible for me to surrender the Indian passport and obtain the surrender certificate while in Spain? ..and then apply for OCI while in Spain? I seem to find no information on the Indian Embassy's website in Spain.
I am aware that I need to surrender the Indian passport within 3 months from the date of naturalisation.
Many thanks.

Yes you can.
You need to surrender your Indian passport as soon as you acquire a foreign nationality however there are few waivers

1. use of indian passport for travel for upto 3 months from naturalisation
2. if indian passport is not used for travel (passport holder just retained it) then it can be surrendered without incurring any fine within 3 years from naturalisation.

however if you need to travel to india beyond the grace 3 month period, then you have to surrender the passport and obtain visa before your travel.

Many thanks for your reply.
I called the Indian Embassy in Madrid and the person who deals with OCI was on vacation, of course. However, another person who I spoke to, told me, that he could help me with basic queries and informed me that I need to get everything done from the UK and need to be living in Spain for 2 years to get the surrender certificate and OCI from Spain. I do not think this is true but this is what I was told over the phone. Any idea on how to proceed?

Just an update - The Indian embassy in Madrid was very efficient (yes!) and I was able to surrender the passport through the post.
Documents were returned in 5 working days.
