Can Canadian retire in U.S?

Post by rbm » Wed Jul 11, 2007 6:22 am

I am a Canadian citizen. I wish to retire in the US. Are there any special "retirement visa" or similar, fast-stream programs for Canadians? Thanks.

Unfortunately there is no retirement visa in the US, even for Canadians. See here.

Thanks Marco 72. I am disappointed that this so. I'll follow up on your suggested site.

No specific retirement visa, but you can spend up to 6 months a year in the U.S. as a visitor.

US retirement

Thanks JAJ, this board certainly keeps you busy. The US seems to be like most European countries which allow foreigners to remain up to 6 months less a day without tax implications.

The other important consideration is retaining your provincial health insurance. Many Canadians who "retire to the US" are very careful to ensure they spend at least half a year in Canada for this reason.
