Duration of Tier 2 General Visa

Hi,

I have been granted a Tier 2 General Visa(with my wife on Partner Visa) for a duration of 1 year, whereas I applied under the category Tier 2 General (3 years).
Could someone please help me understand the reason?

Also, when required at a later point of time, will it be possible to extend the Visa for a total stay of 6 years straight?
And, what will be the fee involved, as I am not sure if it is dependent on the extension duration and will be calculated for those number of years?
