contract rate

Post by docitduo » Tue Jul 31, 2007 3:46 pm

Hi,

Someone known to me has been offered a contract job for three months @ GBP 400 per day. The guy has about 11 years of experience in IT services management (not into software at all).

Just wanted to get some idea if this rate is bad / good / excellent .. as neither he or I I have any clue of how pay packages work for contract jobs here.

regards

If it's in the financial services sector it's a little on the low side. But in any other industrysector that would be a very good rate!

What's the going rate for financial services sector?? The offer that my friend had received was from a leading financial market data provider and not from a bank/investment bank/financial institution etc.

Hi,

I dont think 400 Pounds is a great amount. But prior to that, one should have an idea of his profile in the IT industry.
Any information about his profile?

IT contractors are paid very well, I know I'm one of them. One networking guy I know pulls a grand a day on a six month rolling contract. Pretty good for not London/SE.

I'm earning 2k a week - not too bad for the North, just got 12 month extension.

However it's not all Wine and Roses, they can finish you just like that, you have zero employee rights, but as a rule we all prefer it that way. It's ideal for those folks who prefer to manage their own work profile without being out and out entrepreneurs.

You need to be highly skilled tho - or more to a point, be able to blag you are highly skilled - honestly I've seen some clueless idiots blag their way into a 50k+ contract.

And you need to not hae an employee mindset and workrate.....

Market data providers pay about halfway between banks and non-financial companies. So I'd say he could probably get £450-£500 per day. £400 says alright though. It does depend on how good he is at blagging through the interviews! And as a 1st job after entering the UK it may be they will demand a lower rate.
