Does naturalisation mean british passport...?

Post by ubugger » Fri Aug 03, 2007 2:31 pm

Just to clarify, i'm going in on HSMP...
So i'll have 2yrs, then FLR (3yrs), then ILR (1mth) (after 5yrs in total) - then I qualify for naturalisation/british citizenship?
Does this allow me to get a british passport?

It's likely answered somewhere, i've read so so many threads trying to find something specific, but I haven't!

Thanks,

Aaron

P.S. if it helps, i'm australian!

It goes like this;
1. HSMP for 5 years, then ILR
2. ILR for 12 months then in your sixth year you apply for naturalisation
3. Naturalisation granted by BIA, then you can apply for a British Passport.

Basically...naturalisation is the path one takes to obtain citizenship of another country, and also the country's passport.

There are ways to not do the 12 months on ILR, such as being married to a British Citizen at the time of application for naturalisation, but the 12 months is the requirement stated on the naturalisation application form.

If your naturalisation application is successful when you apply then ofcoures you are a British Citizen after the ceremony and you can apply for a Brit Passport. I don't know about dual citizenship and you would need to read about that!

Aussies (and Brits) can be dual citizens....unless they change the rule by....2013!

Neither the UK nor Australia would require that the original poster give up his Australian citizenship upon naturalising as a British citizen. Therefore, he would be a citizen of both countries - have dual citizenship, if you like; and, accordingly, he would be entitled to carry both an Australian and a British passport.

Yes, absolutely. I was really answering Jes's point... (again; you had already answered it prospectively!).
