WITHDRAWN APPLICATION - LEAVE UK RIGHT NOW?

If a person has put in an application in time to the HO, to extend his student visa, then decides, for whatever reason, to withdraw his application.... Is there a grace period in which he has to leave the UK when he gets his documents back, or should he leave straight away?
