Non EU Mother of UK Child, UK Father Non-Resident

I am a British citizen working outside of the EU, and my wife is a non-EU citizen and mother of our infant British by descent child, both of whom are also living outside the EU at present. We would like my wife and child to immigrate to the UK, whilst I continue working overseas for the short/medium term - is this possible if we purchase a family home in the UK and my wife additionally has 60k+ in savings in the bank to support herself and our child whilst in the UK? Or does the UK father have to be resident in the UK?
