Can I still apply for Right of Abode on entry to the UK?

Hi everyone,

I am eligible for a ROA for the UK, my mother is a British Citizen .....

Is it still possible to apply for a ROA on entry to the UK, or must I start the process either outside, or from inside?

Sorry if this has been asked/answered before!

I am asking because I also appear to be eligible for citizenship by registration (I was born in 1973) but becuase of the events in Europe, I want to make sure that I activate my ROA before any knee-jerk reactions affect it!. Once I have one, I will feel more comfortable abut starting the longer and more expensive process of registration...

Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Firstly, CoE-RoA is not issued on arrival, but by application in advance. It takes between six to sixteen weeks for a CoE-RoA to be issued.
Secondly, CoE-RoA is only issued if you are already a British citizen (unless you are one of a select few Commonwealth citizens who have retained Right of Abode from before 1983). What is your current nationality?

I believe that you would need to register using Form UKM. Once you have that, you can apply for either a CoE-RoA or a British passport.

Sorry about that - I am a New Zealand citizen, and both my sisters applied for their right of abode on their way in to the UK - admittedly this was in the early 90s. I just want to plan accordingly. For example, i don't want to turn up at the border thinking it is a short process!

For NZers it is not usually a problem to obtain a duplicate passport to enable us to keep travelling while visas are processed (think China and Russia for example).

If your mother was born in the UK, then you may be one of the select few Commonwealth citizens who may apply for a CoE-RoA.
