Passport question during process...

Post by megmog » Wed Apr 13, 2016 9:58 am

When applying, do they keep your current passport or do they return it during the process?

Are you able to travel if Citizenship application is in progress?

(Background: My husband's current (south african) passport expires in September....His new SA passport has been applied for but may not arrive until August. We need to travel in Nov/Dec, but wondered if we could still start the naturalization process asap using his current passport?)

If you apply through the NCS (for a small fee) you will be able to retain your passports and other original documents while the application is being processed. The NCS will also check your BC application for validity.

You're welcome. Just be aware regarding travel that once you receive your letter of confirming your BC has been approved, you will have 20 days to book your ceremony with the Council and attend it within 90 days. If you are away when the letter arrives it would be wise to have someone check your post and the ceremony could be booked by telephone from abroad.
