Naturalisation for EEA national after 10 years in UK

I'm writing this post regarding my interest in obtaining Biritsh nationality, however I'm not quite sure whether I have to apply for 'idefinite leave to remain' first or can I proceed onto applying for nationality straight knowing I have lived in the UK for the past 10 years. I have done my college and univeristy degree and I'm currently working as a permament staff in mental health setting. I'm also expecting my first child therefore I'd like you to understand how important for me it is to take immediate action. I will be awaiting for your response. Ps I'm a Polish national.

Why did you bring up 4 year old thread instead of starting your own?

As an EEA citizen you do not need ILR. You do however need permanent residence. This is acquired automatically after 5 years of exercising treaty rights, so you may already have it. Can you post a timeline of your activity in the UK?

PS. if your child is born in the UK and you do have PR, it will automatically be a British citizen.

I would suggest you download Form AN and all related guides to familiarise yourself with the basics.

ILR does not apply to EU/EEA citizens, permanent residence does and it's much cheaper. You automatically get PR by exercising treaty rights for a continuous 5 year period, e.g. worker, job seeker (no more than 6 months at a time) self sufficient / student (the latter two requiring comprehensive sickness insurance for the duration of that status to count towards PR)

All EEA citizens need to apply for a DCPR (document confirming permanent residence) before applying for naturalisation, and they must have held PR status for 12 months at least before applying to naturalise.

I'd apply for DCPR as soon as possible but ensure you supply supporting evidence for a 5 year period starting at least 6 years in the past so hopefully Home Office will note your PR as being attained more than 12 months in the past. Then once you get your PR card you should be able to go straight for naturalisation provided you also have done life in the UK test and fulfil the language criteria.

It is possible you have automatically acquired PR (settled status) already.

As you are an A8 national, were you fully and properly registered for WRS if working until 2011?

As a student in UK, did you have health insurance eg CSI or a foreign-issued EHIC?

Have you enjoyed any prolonged absences from UK since you arrived?

Note If you are settled (or British) when your child is born, s/he will also be British.
