Question about OCI renewal

Hello

My sons British passport has just been renewed, so the OCI also needs to be renewed.
We were planning to go to India in August and the time it takes to complete renewal is 6-8 weeks. Has anybody done the renewal and does it really takes this long? Would better option be 6 month visitor visa and then renew OCI after holiday?
