OCI / Indian Passport Surrender Queries

Hi All,

Got few queries regarding OCI.

1. Is OCI a plastic card or Sticker on your British passport?

2. After reading the content on vfs website - http://www.vfsglobal.com/India/UK/pdf/OCI_050316.pdf

I understand the process can take up to 8 weeks.

A) Will Indian consulate keep my British passport for 8 weeks or will I get it back after verification?

B) While OCI is under process- Can I travel to India on Indian passport?

3. Surrender process

Is this OCI process then surrender passport or surrender Indian passport then OCI process ?

Can you please advice?

It looks like , you are new to the entire process, hope a long way to go......
Let me try to share what I know.

1. Is OCI a plastic card or Sticker on your British passport?

It looks like Indian passport and has very few pages ( I think four ) I am yet to get mine.

2. After reading the content on vfs website - http://www.vfsglobal.com/India/UK/pdf/OCI_050316.pdf

I understand the process can take up to 8 weeks.

Yes, if you are lucky

A) Will Indian consulate keep my British passport for 8 weeks or will I get it back after verification?

NO, you would not having your Indian Passport

3. Surrender process

Is this OCI process then surrender passport or surrender Indian passport then OCI process ?

First you have to Surrender your passport to obtain OCI card

Yes, you are correct - I'm very new to this obtaining OCI process.

Would you be kind to provide me link / information on how to get surrender certificate ?

What I understand from your post is before I apply for OCI card online I must have surrender certificate - is this correct

Yes... You need to Surrender you passport when you get a foreign citizenship and get a Surrender certificate. This is basic document for applying for OCI or for VISA for India.

I’ve checked the website you mentioned in your post, When I am booking an appointment for “Surrender certificate” on Web: http://www.vfsglobal.com/India/UK/sched ... tment.html

When I click on “Schedule an appointment” and I fill the VAC Centre, number of application visiting & Service.

For Service – I select “Surrender of Passport” then on the new window it ask me to fill all my information (passport number, first name etc.) and also ask me to enter “OCI Registration Number” – This is place I am getting confused.

Can you please advise what should I enter ? as my understanding is “Surrender certificate” is a part of process to obtain OCI ?

Can you please confirm.

Hi FB, you can give the passport number in the 'OCI Registration number' as well. I have done the same.

I am in same boat and looking to surrender my passport to get my surrender certificate for OCI.

As per guideline on http://www.vfsglobal.com/india/uk/Surre ... provisions
I understand Original British passport is not required for surrender of passport.

Self-attested photocopy of the current British / Foreign Passport( Only the photo page*)
*Note- If the applicant has had more than one British passports since naturalisation, They are required to submit the original first British passport & self-attested photocopies of all the pages of the first British passport’.

Please correct me if I am wrong on VFS appointment page
We need to put Indian passport number in "OCI registration" and "passport number field".
We do not need to provide British passport number.

How much time it took to get surrender certificate and OCI card afterwards?

Can we apply for normal Indian visa while we are waiting ?
