Fiance moving to live with me

Post by LewisEv » Mon Jun 20, 2016 6:28 pm

First time I am posting on here so apologies in advance if it has been answered elsewhere or if I am posting in the wrong location.

My fiance lives in Norway and myself in Wales and we are looking into her moving here so we can be together properly but we have ran into many complications, the main is, she suffers from crohn's severely leaving her unable to work and relying on welfare.
If she is to come here for a holiday, they will stop her claim from that let alone if she is to live here and if she is to live here what would she be able to apply for?

Thanks in advance for replies.

Welcome.

Nationality of fiance? What is fiance's connection to UK? Have they contributed to UK social assistance system previously?

Nationality and immigration status of you?

My fiance is Norwegian and her connection is myself being British. No she hasn't contributed previously.

In that case your fiance can just jump on the next flight or ferry south.
As an EEA (although not EU) citizen she can enjoy free movement and just pop over to UK.

She has an initial 3 months grace period to settle down in UK.

After that, if she cannot work, she will have to be supported by you and have CSI (health insurance) in place.
No benefits unfortunately as that would breach her 'self-sufficient' status.

Alternately she could become a student but again CSI is required.

In 5 years (assuming no Brexit) she could acquire PR (settled status).

Tell fiance to bring her Norweigan EHIC too,

You can get up to speed on free movement here:

Yeah the largest issue we have is, I myself am a student and she is unable to work or study due to her illness and it seems her welfare isn't willing to help her if she is to move to another country.

No benefits from the UK, if that was what you were asking.

As an EU citizen who isn't exercising treaty rights, she would only be able to stay for 3 months anyway. How long can she leave Norway/holiday in another country, before Norway stops her benefits?

Perhaps work around that timeline so that she visits during your holidays? Or you visit her during your holidays. Or you move to to Norway to study, as an EU student exercising treaty rights.
