maintenance funds query ... need some help plz..

Hello everyone..

This query is for my friend.

Situation: My friend is a student of Phd (statistics) in Liverpool UK. His wife and a kid (born in UK) on his dependent visa's. He had about 4 years visa to complete Phd, but now he need extension for 1 more year to complete his studies inside UK.
Study fees been already paid in full to the university.

Question: How much maintenance funds he needs to show. its main applicant, wife and a kid. Is it any reduce maintenance funds requirements apply to him?
