Self Empoyment - Relevant tax year etc

Post by strontiumdog74 » Thu Jun 30, 2016 7:59 pm

Sorry this is a bit random, I am trying to help a friend who has asked my advice and I don't know anything about the self employment route.

She has just got married to a British national who is self-employed

Apparently during the last financial tax year 2015/2016 he earned approximately £15k and therefore does not meet the financial requirements.

I believe that in the year 2014/2015 he also did not meet the requirements so he cannot use the two year average option either.

Am I right in thinking in order to prove that he achieved the min requirements he will have to wait until after his tax and earnings details are submitted formally for the period 2016/2017. Meaning that I assume the earliest they can apply is in May 2017 if he meets the requirements.

His accountant has told him that he can apply in 6 months time if he earns the required limit during the period from April 2016 to the point he applies. It's funny how the accountant thinks he is an expert on the UKVI process.

From what I have read he cannot submit partial year earnings as proof of achievement of meeting the financial requirements?

If anyone can explain this to me so I can tell my friend how to proceed and what they need to do I would greatly appreciate it.

No, Category F clearly mentioned in bold : Last full financial year runs from 6 April to 5 April. They ask annual self assessment tax return and bank statements for the same 12-month period as the tax returns so how he gonna provide them in the middle of tax year

Has he done any salaried or non salaried employment in year 2014/2015?

Thanks for reply, no he's done no salaried work.

So I guess I'm right, the earliest he could prove he achieved the requirements is after the end of this tax year so after April 2017.
