Hello everybody,
This board has been very informative so thank you for all of your help so far.
I am a UK citizen and my soon-to-be-husband is a US citizen. We're planning on moving to Ireland together in June 2017 (ugh Brexit). It seems like once we move to Ireland together, it will take a while (14 weeks from application, it seems) for him to get his temporary Stamp 4 and then 6 months or more to get a 5 year Stamp 4.
That's a lot of hanging around unemployed for him and he's a physics professor, so even when he gets the temporary Stamp 4, finding somewhere that will hire him temporarily for only 6 months won't be easy.
So we're considering applying for a Working Holiday Visa for him solely because it will allow him to work immediately after arriving in Ireland. The visa lasts a year. I have two questions about this:
1) Will he face any difficulties with this type of visa at border control if he explains he is joining me and planning on staying? The working holiday visa is strictly for people who are planning on working in Ireland for a year and then leaving, so much so that we must show evidence of having booked return flights when applying for it. I worry that if he explains he is planning on staying with me via EU1, he is technically breaking the conditions of his visa and may get refused entry.
2) Is it even possible to apply for the EU1 while he is on a working holiday visa? Does anyone have any experience of this? Do I need to arrive at the airport with him and show a marriage certificate? Could he get away with pretending he's not planning on staying (obviously will try to avoid lying if we can)?
Thanks in advance for your help.
