Earliest You Can Apply for Marriage Visa Extension

Hi,

My Wife arrived in the UK on 09 December 2014. Her visa is due to expire on August 2017. We will be applying for the 5 year extension visa.

We were planning a trip abroad around May 2017 and just wanted the earliest possible time to apply for the extension or can you only apply if there is around 2 months left till the visa expires?
