Certified passport copy

Is this really required? I have sent a self attested copy of my British passport. My spouse is applying this week for the visa.

Previously I have done many visitor visa applications and have always provided self attested copy of passport.
Niether do I see this mentioned in any requirements so want to be sure.

Spouse visa application for a non EU national.

Also, spoke to a friend recently and he just provided a photocopy.

This is from a UKBA published guidance, but as the UKBA was disbanded in March 2013 and superseded by the UKVI in April 2013, I can't confirm that this includes the sponsor's passport. It certainly remains relevant for bank statements, pay slips etc:
"Send the original documents, if you have them, not copies. In exceptional circumstances, Home Office will accept a photocopy that is certified as an accurate copy by the body or authority that issued the original, or by a notary - but you must include a letter explaining why you are providing a certified copy rather than the original document."

Thanks and makes sense. I have seen few posts on the forum and hence concerned.

I always submit original bank statements and payslips and this time providing my (sponsors) self attested copy of passport.

Guessing that should be sufficient.

Personally, I prefer the belt & braces approach when dealing with the HO and would submit a legally certified copy (post office or solicitor).

True, but one could argue they can always verify from IPS. Arent they all part of Home Ministry ?

They could, but they expect the applicant to do all the leg work and submit the relevant evidence.
