I am an EU citizen and have a Document Certifying Permanent Residence. My non-EEA wife joined me in the UK on November 26th, 2015, we applied for her Residence Card on March 8, 2016 and hopefully it will come through by late September.
However, we are worried that even she gets the RC for 5 years she will not be able to apply for PR because of Brexit and hence will not be able to apply for British Citizenship either. For us it would be crucial to obtain a better passport for her, because due to visa restrictions even visiting her home country is a nightmare as she needs visa not only to the US and Canada but even to countries like Colombia and Mexico.
Due to health problems I am on benefits, so she wouldn't qualify under British immigration rules.
I know that nobody knows anything for sure about Brexit, but what is the most likely scenario? After 5 years will she be able to apply for PR (or ILR) under some temporary provisions? Because if not, we will probably be better off if I apply for British citizenship right now (just in case) and then we move to another EU country where she definitely will be able to naturalize.
