Can a sponsor withdraw to stop your immigration?

Post by stephan1000 » Mon Aug 08, 2016 4:57 pm

Dear All,

I have a 5 year UK visa (multi entry) and recently lost contact with the original visa sponsor (general tourist).

I am a bit worried that he could have withdrawn sponsorship and I need to travel urgently next week to UK.

Can the sponsor stop me from coming somehow ?

Regards

Stephan

What type of sponsorship was the sponsor providing when you applied for the visa?

It wouldn't really be up to the sponsor to stop you from visiting the UK, more to the point would be what the immigration officer believes when you arrive. As they normally do, when questioning you on arrival ask how you will be supporting yourself during your stay and you can answer those questions and provide evidence to support your claims if requested, then I see no issue.

Sponsorship for a visit, is not something that is mandatory, as there are many who support themselves during visits to the UK and have clear travel plans with documentation to support this and that they will return at the end of the visit. You may however need to explain that for your previous visit when you obtained your visa you had a sponsor, but that you will be supporting yourself this time around. Here I'm assuming you've travelled on this 5 year visa before and that this isn't the first time you are travelling on it.

The sponsor originally stated they are paying/accomodating my stay.

Can the sponsor block my entry for any reason?

Unlikely, but as you've already been advised your problem may be entering the UK as a visitor under different circumstances...without a sponsor. You may well be asked by the Immigration Officer for proof of where you will be staying and what your itinerary is. They may even try to contact your sponsor before they permit you entry.

Yes, it's highly unlikely that a sponsor would be able to block your entry, as you put it. Casa has mentioned a valid point around the fact that, if they have a former sponsor mentioned on record, and they have doubts about your visit, then they may attempt to contact them.

You haven't mentioned whether this is the first time you are entering the UK on your visa (which has a long validity period of 5 years). But if it isn't, then I'd say it wouldn't be unusual for previous sponsorship to no longer be required or change when you are visiting over the course of the 5 years it's valid. So personally I'd say it's really up to you what you say & show to the IO on arrival. Not the sponsor.
