New visa on the next day after old expires

I have a student visa till 30 Jan 2017. My graduation ceremony will be on 31 Jan 2017. I'm going to my home country soon and will apply for a general visitor visa to attend my ceremony. My question is: can I enter the uk a couple of days before the end of my student visa and attend the ceremony with a new visa WITHOUT leaving the country and entering it again to get an open stamp on my new visa? Is it legal?
