Travel with new passport and tier 2 general visa.

Post by India_123 » Sat Aug 27, 2016 11:36 am

Hi All,

I am on Tier 2 general visa and my passport is about to expire in 2 months. I applied and got a new passport in UK itself. Do i need to update anywhere in my visa / UKBA records about my new passport before I travel with it? Or the BRP card is independent of passport?

Kindly advice.

Thanks in advance.

BRP card is independent of the passport. However, you will need to carry both the old & new passport + BRP card whenever you travel.

I have had tier 2 visa issued on my old passport and then I rrenewed it. I have subsequently travelled abroad and entered UK again with only my BRP and the new passport. I did not have to carry my old passport. It is common sense that passports do expire and I have not seen any guidance stating you have to carry your old passport

Transfer your visa to a new passport wrote:You don’t have to transfer your visa - you can carry both your old and new passports when travelling to or from the UK instead.

For those with visa vignette stuck on their old passports, the link by Vinny is relevant. For those with a BRP to begin with, the expired passport has no use once a new passport is obtained.. (speaking from first hand experience)..

Well, I too speak from first hand experience. I was asked to show the old passport as well along with the BRP. Guess it depends on the officer at the desk. There is no harm in carrying both.

Agreed. It's better to carry your old passport just in case to avoid any hassle
