Quick Ireland Citizenship by Descent question.

Post by Ireland9 » Wed Sep 07, 2016 7:42 pm

Hello all. I'll make this quick.

Both great-grandparents born in Ireland.
Granfather born in Scotland, moved to the US as an infant.
Subsequent generations (mother, myself) born in United States.

Nobody claimed Irish citizenship at any point in time.

Is this a potentially workable bloodline to attain IE citizenship?

Thanks.

Tom.

Hi there,
Do you live in Ireland? If so, then you could make an application based on Irish Associations if you could provide certificates demonstrating that your great-grandparents were born in Ireland.

If not, then sadly not. To claim citizenship through descent it has to be either parent or grandparents. I applied for citizenship through great-grandparents after living in Ireland for a period of time. (application not yet approved).

Thanks very much for the reply.

So there is a section in the law that provides for an Irish citizenship 'right' or some kind of fast track for people with Irish born great grandparents if that person is living in Ireland?

Hi there, it is certainly not a fast-track. If anything, it is a slow track - it will still take 6 months or more to process for you can claim Irish citizenship through Associations with Ireland (blood, adoption, civil partnership etc) but it is a 'waiver scheme'. This means that it is fully at the discretion of the Minister for Justice. You should have lived in Ireland for at least 3 years prior to applying.
