British Citizen traveling on Indian passport

Post by rdudala » Sat Sep 24, 2016 10:53 am

Dear board members thanks a lot for your guidance throughout last seven years in UK, am happy to say that yesterday I got my British passport following naturalisation.

I have been naturalised on 24th August, I still have my Indian passport with me. I understand there's a three-month grace period before I have to surrender my Indian passport. I have to travel to India on an emergency and will probably stay in India for a month or two or longer.

Now, should i apply for visa and travel to India on UK passport?
Can I go on Indian passport ?

In either case above most importantly can I apply for OCI whilst I am in India?

Please advise and appreciate your help.

As far as I know, You are supposed to obtain a surrender your passport after receiving your naturalisation.

yes, you can travel on your indian passport, but on surrendering it you will be charged a fine.

else on a british passport.
or you can apply for an e-visa, 4 days before the date of travel, valid for 30 days stay - £38, single entry

or obtain a multiple entry visa for £100

yes, you can.

If you'd applied for a passport straight away you'd already have it by now (not much use I know but goes to show the importance of not putting things off!)

tjoseph,

I am in similar situvation. I did not surrender Indian passport, naturalized on 03rd June 2016. I applied for E-Visa today and waiting decision. During E-Visa application website didn't ask for surrender certificate.
Is it advisable to take an appointment to surrender Indian passport before I travel ?

1) I am not sure if you can apply for entry visa while you still hold a INDIAN passport (during the grace period.) but if you are allowed to do so.. Visa will arrive in less than a week.. Go for Entry visa - Multiple entries.. (I have done that.. Got my passport in Jan.. couldnt apply for OCI.. but had to travel to INdia urgently.. I applied for Visa in April..got it in a week.. zoom off to India.. easy peasy)

2)
Your question //
In either case above most importantly can I apply for OCI whilst I am in India?

Yes you can.. but you can do it only in the capital city of the state..atleast this was the case in my state.. most important thing is you dont get it in few weeks.. the FRRO officer told me it will take anything above 3 months.. so if it doesnt arrive in 3 months..and if you start to UK.. you may lose the fee thats all.. I dont know if they hold back any of your original certificates..
