New HSMP holder in the UK

Post by waa15 » Thu Dec 20, 2007 5:32 pm

Hi,
I've just arrived in the UK on HSMP.
Apart from searching for a job, what do I need to do? I mean how do I need to register in any government establishment or not? What will be my ID/work permit number? Is it the same as the number on the EC stamped in my passport?

Thanks

waa

Hi waa:

You should get your NHS number. You can research on here how to do that. You'll need to have evidence that you've been looking for a job.

Depending upon what country your from, you may also have to register with the police. They would have told you that when you arrived during the immigration process (probably).

Good luck with your job hunt.

Why does one need a NHS no for job hunting?

http://www.dwp.gov.uk/lifeevent/benefits/ni_number.asp

The link above directs to call 0845 600 0643 to make an appointment. I called them myself and was told I need proof that I've been looking for employment (email printouts to/from recruiters etc., or better yet an offer letter/contract if a job has been secured), TWO acceptable id's (passport/birth certificate or passport/driver's license etc. - fyi I was told that non-UK driver's license should also be acceptable) and proof of residence in UK (bank statement or a letter from friend should suffice). Hope this helps.
