Found your post while searching for a similar problem of mine. Even I have posted my passport and BRP card through Special Delivery and 1 prepaid Special Delivery cover for return.
When I track it in Royal Mail the status of delivery says "we were unable to deliver as there was no access to the delivery address".
Just confirming did you send via Special Delivery or only for return. If so were you able to track it online.
