Question about work history (Section 1.45)

Post by Nutmeg » Sun Oct 16, 2016 4:42 pm

Hi all,

I am an Italian citizen, and I obtained a PR document last year. I will be able to apply for UK citizenship next January, but I am already starting to collect the documents. I had a look at the application form, and I am really confused about section 1.45 (Details of your employment).

I moved to the UK in 2010 as a student, and I have always studied since then. Since 2014 I have been receiving a PhD scolarship, but since I don't pay taxes on it it does not count as a job. I didn't even have a National Insurance Number until last October.

Nevertheless since last year (2015) I have been on the payroll of my university, just to do some temporary jobs (like marking coursework, or doing some tutorials). So far I only earned 40£ or so in this way, and I guess I won't be earning more than an extra 100-200£ by the time I apply. Of course I have not paid taxes on these sums, which are way below the personal allowance.

The question is: what should I write as my occupation? Student or employee? And should I mention these occasional jobs? Should I also not write anything regarding my work history from 2010 to 2015?

Thanks for the help!

Student.

Your work appears to be supplementary and marginal to your activity as a student.
You should mention it in your timeline but caseworker will probably disregard it once they've crosschecked and verified with HMRC that all is above board.

Thanks noajthan for the help!

If I write student as an answer to question 1.45, which box shall I tick in question 1.46? Because the only possibilities are: employee, business-partner, self-employed and director. Being a student I don't think I belong to any of those four categories.

Suggest just write in "Student" and/or explain in additional info section of form.
