Comprehensive Sickness Insurence / PR / student / Polish

Post by ThePolishGal » Sun Dec 04, 2016 8:38 pm

Good evening,

I am seeking advice on what to do / if there's anything I can do to finish my permanent residence application and send it off.
My story in short: I came to the UK in September/October 2011 to study, I graduated in July 2015 with Master's in Computer Science. Since September 2015 (had to wait two months for my contract to begin) I've been working full-time as a software engineer in the UK. Since the end of September this year I am applicable for permanent residence card (in theory don't have to, but I am keen on citizenship in the long run + the Brexit situation).
As I was filling in the form I came across the "comprehensive sickness insurence" section during my student years. I've never seen that as a condition for premanent residence card anywhere, I thought I was automatically insured as a EU student at UK university anyway? I've been using NHS services (check-ups, prescriptions etc.) for free ever since my 1st year at uni. I didn't buy any policies, European insurance or others.
My parents' Polish insurance covered me too, though uncertain for how long (possibly without the last year at uni, I'll have that verified in the next 1-2 days). Could I attach a copy of it with my name on it to my applicatoin, would that work, if I tick that as "private insurance"? Would I have to have it translated to English, too?

I'm really baffled by this application at this point. Gathering all the documents across 5 years (especially uni years when I had to move places each year) was very challenging, now this... Is it worth going to some solicitors/lawyers/advisors for help or is it kinda lost cause here and my stay in the UK is actually valid since I started my full-time job?

Thank you for any advice.

As a student you needed CSI so that you were in fact a qualified person and your carefree student years counted towards acquiring PR;
or else a foreign EHIC or foreign health cover so, yes, do check on any policy/scheme from home country.
:arrow: Translation required if not in English or Welsh.

:idea: Alternately, if you were the dependent of a qualified person present in UK at same time you could apply on the basis of being sponsored by a Union citizen and so no need to show CSI.

No need to utilise a lawyer/advisor, a graduate should be capable of handling this.

:idea: Pro tip: especially as you also have ambitions for citizenship - always look ahead to next application and the next (eg naturalisation then passport).
See what is required ahead of time and work towards generating the necessary papertrail;
also cultivating necessary contacts (to act as referees) & etc etc.
All that is gold does not glitter; Not all those who wander are lost. E&OE.

Hello,
Thank you for the reply. Back when I was a student, I wasn't thinking about the citizenship and didn't see residence as something I'd want/need at all.Then the referendum happened. Also, if I ever browsed through to websites about it, it only ever mentioned "students", not "students with comprehensive sickness insurance", it took some digging/filling in the form to come across this term.
Thank you, I'll find out if I my parents' insurance covered me and see it translated if so. Otherwise, I guess I need to wait 3.5 years and hope to be able to stay for that long.
Cheers.
