Can you be a contractor under T4?

Post by s000y » Wed Jan 04, 2017 5:37 am

Hi Guys

Is it allowed to be a contractor under Tier 4 if all the payments go through an umbrella company?
The working terms will be under 20 hours per week, but as contractors get paid per day and the contract with umbrella company does not normally state clearly of the working time, will that violate the visa conditions?

Thanks in advance for any kind advice.

You can work for an employer up to the maximum hours stated on your BRP, 20 or 10 during term-time. You cannot be self-employed, which a contractor would be. To be honest, it sounds like you are trying to make self-employment look like work for an employer, in order to get around the prohibition on self-employment.

See the Tier 4 Policy Guidance, pages 67 to 70.
