Child benefit for ILR

Post by jshs » Tue Jan 10, 2017 5:55 pm

Hello,

My husband and I were granted ILR in May. We were wondering if we can apply for child benefit for our 8 year old son who has just been granted citizenship because he was born here. I see on old posts on this board that we would have qualified, but I don't see anything recent. On www.gov.uk it states that we need citizenship and it doesn't mention those with ILR. Any advice? Thanks!

You may claim CB if child is in UK and you have right to reside in UK and your main home is in UK.

As you have ILR, you can claim Child Benefit. Child Benefit is a public fund but as ILR holders, you no longer have 'no recourse to public funds' stamped and can therefore claim public funds. You can read about public funds here.

You don't have to be a British citizen to claim.
