British Passport Application-Expired Non British Passport

Hello all

I want to start the process of British Passport application online. However I just realised that my original non-British passport that I am supposed to send with the application has been expired two months ago.

Would it be acceptable for HMPO to accept this expired (but uncancelled) original non-British passport and accept my application?

Also, could anyone tell me the best way to contact HMPO office for this enquiry if I don't get a satisfactory answer here.
