Dear all,
my wife and I face the following challenge:
I am a German national living and working the UK, my wife is a Mauritian national and has a EEA residence card (and German permanent residency). We both live in the UK.
My wife plans to give birth to our child in Mauritius due to family support there. We plan to return to the UK when the child is 4 weeks old. As per German citizenship law, the child will have both Mauritian and German citizenship. In terms of travel documents for the child we therefore have two options:
The child will be issued a Mauritian passport quite quickly. This is our preferred option, since it will allow us to return to the UK quickly. Will it be sufficient to provide the Mauritian passport and a birth certificate upon immigration at the UK airport (Mauritians can enter the UK without visa for up to 3 months)? I don't think it's necessary to apply for a EEA FP for the child? Once in the UK, we will apply for the child's German passport.
The alternative is to apply for a German passport for the child in Mauritius already, however, this would take a considerable amount of time since it will be processed by the German embassy in South Africa and would include courier time between the two countries and Germany.
Looking forward to your feedback!
