10YR Permanent Residence: Can I Apply for Citizenship?

Post by Sabby_00 » Wed Mar 29, 2017 6:51 pm

Hi,

I received a 10yr Permanent Residence Document in January 2015, which is valid until January 2025. I am a Canadian citizen who has been living and working in the UK since Sept 2009 (with no breaks) as the spouse of an EU citizen who is also working and living in the UK. Am I eligible to apply for British Citizenship at this time? I'm a little confused because according to the Home Office 's website, citizens from outside the EEA can only apply for citizenship if they have Indefinite Leave to Remain, which I do not seem to have as my Permanent Residence Documentation expires in 2025. Do I need to apply for ILR first? If so, can I do so now?

Many thanks!

Do you have a Permanent Residence Card issued to you as the family member of an EEA Citizen? If so, you do not need ILR. PR is the equivalent of ILR for EEA citizens and their family members.

Provided that you acquired PR (not the card, but PR status) at least a year ago, you can apply for British citizenship with the PR Card.

Your previous posts suggest that you got your PR card in February 2015. You can therefore apply for British citizenship directly now.
