Car hire, recent full UK license and old international one

This is an area for the discussion of matters related to issues about moving from one country to another. Examples could be about money transfer, moving and packing, validity of driving licence, etc..

It is not a general non-immigration, free-for-all area.

Car hire, recent full UK license and old international one

Post by basht » Fri Apr 21, 2017 10:31 pm

I live in the UK for more than one year, and thus my international driver license issued overseas in no more valid here. I also have a new full UK license but it is issued about a month ago only.

Some car hire companies want me to have 1 year of license validity, especially when I hire specific types of vehicles. My plan is
- to show them my international driving license
- if they somehow find out that I am here for more than a year and it is not valid (e.g. my UK ID is more than one year old, or they have the info in their proof-of-address DB) -- then show them my full license
- if the police gets interested in my driving license while I'm driving -- show them my full license

So the questions are:
1) Is it likely to happen that the rent company is clever enough to find out how long I am a resident in the UK?
2) Is it likely my insurance would be void because of me did this trick?

Show them both licences as evidence that you are not a new driver.
