For how long do I have to prove that I am self-sufficient?

Post by capolicarpo » Wed May 03, 2017 1:11 am

Dear all,

I am an EU national working in UK as a visiting researcher in an university. I have a scholarship to conduct the research from my country, so I can't be classified as an UK worker for an EEA QP application (as I don't pay taxes here). However, I would like to apply for a residence card for me and my husband (non EU) to prove his right to work. Do you know if applying as a self-sufficient would be appropriate in this case? For how long do I have to prove that I am self-sufficient? My scholarship is for 12 months, should I prove resources for the next 5 years (the period in which the residence card is valid)?

Thank you very much for your time!

You are entitled to apply for registration certificate for yourself and residence card for your husband (non-EEA).
You need to show that you are a genuine couple, EEA person exercising her treaty rights in the UK and if you want to go through the self-sufficient way you need to provide a CSI for a relevant period.
After 5 years both of you can apply for PR.

Thank you very much for your reply, forestgump.

Is there another option besides self-sufficient? As far as I understood, I can't be considered a worker as I am not paying taxes here and I am not a student since I am not enrolled in any course at the university.

Regarding the resources to prove being self-sufficient, would be a problem to have just a one year contract for my scholarship?

As you are not a worker, student, self-employed person, but if you can prove that you are self-sufficient (make sure you have appropriate amount of money and CSI).
After 1 year of your contract of scholarship, you can change your status as a 'qualified person' on worker, student, self-employed.
