Setting up a second business but as a sole trader?

I am currently running a company and I intend to continue running it as it is doing reasonably well.

I know that I can set up multiple businesses, but is it ok if I set up a second business as a sole trader/self employed individual, rather than become the director of another company?

Yes, you can be either of those or register as both.
