Lost BRP is the police reference number still required?

Royal Mail recently has lost my BRP. I went to the police station and was told that there is no longer need to report lost BRP to them.

Who have applied recently - is this true, that I will no longer need the reference/crime number to apply for the replacement for the lost BRP?
