ROA/COE Parent & Child Passport Application

Post by mpc108 » Fri Aug 18, 2017 9:25 am

Hi everyone,

I am a BC by birth to a naturalized BC father and a Malaysian mother. My child passport expired about 25 years ago and was never renewed after obtaining the Msian one.

My child is born in Turkey to a Turkish father and Turkey allows dual nationality. I would like to obtain his British child passport for him.

Msia does not allow dual nationality so I am considering applying for the ROA/COE for my Msian passport(never had one before) as I am not wanting to risk getting the citizenship revoked.

My questions are:
1) What is the likelihood of being granted the ROA with the fact that I did have a British passport before even though it expired 25 years ago?
2) Can I apply for my child's British passport now without having the ROA in my passport? Or would his application be more straightforward if I did already have it in place?

Would appreciate any advise offered.

Thank you.

Where were you born? If you were born outside the UK, you are a British citizen by descent and your child can not inherit your British citizenship.

You can apply for a CoE-RoA provided you can prove that you are a British citizen by descent. You will need
a) Your father's naturalisation certificate
b) Your birth certificate
c) Your parents' marriage certificate

As mentioned above, if you yourself were born outside the UK, your child is not a British citizen and hence can not apply for a British passport.

Thank you for your reply secret.simon.

I was born in the UK.

Would I need to apply for my CoE-RoA first before applying for my child's british passport? Or can I proceed with the application without it?

You should be able to apply directly for a British passport for the child provided you give proof of your British citizenship.

If you were born before 1983, your full British birth certificate may be sufficient.

If in 1983 or after, same proof as required for your CoE-RoA mentioned above.

In both cases, you will also need the child's birth certificate and if you are the father of the child, either proof of being married to the mother or a sanctioned DNA paternity test.
