Does requesting your passport from the HO affect your application?

Hi,

I need some advice. My wife is Canadian and I am Portuguese (lived in the UK for over 25years) and we have applied for a permanent residence card for her a couple of months ago. She has done her biometrics and has also received her right to work letter. She would like to go back to Canada for christmas but obviously needs her passport. When applying online you get various warnings and scare mongering that if you request your passport your application may be refused or voided.

Has anyone requested their documents for travel purposes and everything turned out fine? My wife also needs to renew her passport as she only has 3 months until it expires. Any help would be much appreciated.
