OCI query/problem

I am after advice on an OCI application for my wife.
She will be applying based on her parents who were born in India prior to partition but moved to the UK over 55 years ago. Her father was born in Karachi (1935) and mother in Mumbai (1940). Both hold UK passports but neither can find their original birth certificates. My wife is obviously a UK passport holder having been born here.
Does anyone know what type of documents are required to prove their Indian origin (as this is not entirely clear on the OCI advice boards). Will their current/elapsed UK passports be enough? If not, can anyone suggest anything else we can do?
